In September 1997, mussel lines were placed over a known natural lobster hatchery at Dooneen in Dunmanus Bay. Although an application for planning permission had been made, none had been granted. Fishermen appealed to the Department of the Marine to intervene but the work continued. Finally, in desparation, fishermen confronted the workers involved in the installation and work stopped. Meetings were held between local residents, tourist interests and fishermen. Many letters were written to politicians at all levels but no action was ever known to have been taken against the mussel developers. When a camera crew from RTE's "Prime Time" visited the location and began to ask questions, the surface lines were removed and anchors that had been waiting on a nearby pier were also moved. Many more letters were written to Ministers, politicians, senior staff at BIM and the Department of the Marine, asking to have them removed but the anchors already on the ocean floor, are there to this day. FISH are still requesting that the anchors be removed and are in consultation with their solicitors and senior politicians over the situation.
